Bank holiday warning as Brits stuck in huge airport queues in Spain

MORE Holidaymakers have to deal with huge queues at airports in Spain due to long waiting times at security checks.

Holidaymakers using Mallorca Airport warn of serious health concerns amid reports it still takes an hour to get through security, with “congestion and crowds everywhere”.

Although many coronavirus restrictions have been lifted in Spain, the government still advises social distancing wherever possible, particularly at transport hubs.

But that’s impossible at Mallorca’s Palma Airport, say fed-up tourists, and one passenger says: “There was no distance between people.”

The situation is being blamed on a shortage of staff, with even workers demanding action to ensure this weekend’s chaotic scenes are not repeated throughout the summer.

They believe that unless action is taken, it will only get worse as more and more tourists arrive every day.

Holidaymakers have taken to social media to complain about the queues and the frustration of waiting so long to get through security.

“Even if you get to the airport on time, you can find hundreds of people waiting without being able to go any further,” they say.

One Brit posted: “It’s going to be a nightmare at the airport this summer if it does!”

Passengers claim that several airport buses or holiday buses arrive at the same time at different times, adding to the overcrowding problems.

Airport officials say there is a shortage of security guards because the contracts being offered are unattractive or part-time.

The president of the Líneas Aéreas association, Javier Gándara, has already called for more national police officers to be called in to check passports and warns that this could also happen in the summer.

He said: “The tourism sector is key for the Spanish economy and for the recovery from a pandemic, so we consider the congestion situation at airport passport controls unsustainable.

“This problem directly affects passengers, but it also means an additional difficulty for the already complex operations of the airlines and has a negative impact on Spain’s international image.

“In fact, this problem of congestion at passport control has spread in the international media, which may discourage international travelers from coming to our holiday country. We can’t afford that.”

Sun-seeking Britons are jetting to Mallorca in the hundreds as the number of tourists holidaying in Magaluf has returned to pre-Covid levels.

It’s not just Mallorca Airport with the queues though – up to 3,000 passengers missed their flight at Madrid Airport over the Easter holidays.

The long queues are also made worse by new rules for Brits.

Ever since the UK left the EU, Brits have had to have their passports stamped when leaving Europe.
