Bank manager foils robbery by threatening knife-wielding thug with pliers [Watch]

It’s only natural for employees to duck for cover or surrender completely when a bank is the target of an armed robbery, but it takes only a brave heart to confront the gunmen of their limited resources. There are stories of bank robbers being fended off with sledgehammers, knives and even rocks, but the incident of fending off attackers with pliers is one for the books.

Well, that’s exactly what happened at an Indian bank, where a bank manager forced a robber to flee by threatening him with a pair of pliers – not half as deadly as a gun or knife.

The incident took place at Marudhara Gramin Bank in Sri Ganganagar in the Indian state of Rajasthan on Saturday. Footage from a CCTV camera shows the manager springing into action as the robber begins threatening the employees with a knife. The manager, identified as Poonam Gupta, takes a pair of pliers and frightens the man with them.

The clip obtained by NDTV shows the masked robber with a bag, which he drops at the entrance and enters the bank with a knife. The second clip appears to show the inside of the bank, with the robber pointing a knife at the employees. Gupta, who was in her cubicle at the time, storms out loudly and confronts the assailant, who looks unimpressed as he walks around the branch asking the staff to fill another bag with cash.

And as he rages, a pair of pliers falls from his pocket and Gupta hops onto the frame to quickly grab the tool, which she then points at the burglar, making him run off almost in the blink of an eye.

After the arrest, the accused – Lavish Arora – identified himself as a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a notorious local gang frequent in racketeering and murders. The accused is said to be a resident of Davda Colony in Sriganganagar. He is being questioned by the authorities in connection with the robbery. Authorities are trying to find out if he has a criminal past.

Meanwhile, authorities are hailing Gupta as a hero for her quick action that prevented the bank’s entire US$36,534.60 (30 INR lacs) in reserves from being stolen, India TV reported.
