Bank of Ireland appoints insider Mark Spain as CFO as O’Grady exits

Bank of Ireland has appointed Mark Spain as Group Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director, replacing Myles O’Grady, who is taking up the same position at Musgrave Group.

ark Spain has worked at the Bank since 1998 in a number of increasingly senior roles. He first joined the group as Client Advisory Director at IBI Corporate Finance. In 2013 he became Director of Group Investor Relations, followed by Director of Group Finance in 2016.

He has been Chief Strategy Officer and a member of the Group Executive Committee since 2019, where he led the implementation of initiatives including the successful bid for Davy and the agreement to acquire the KBC Bank Ireland portfolios in 2021.

He will take over as CFO on March 31.

Meanwhile, Enda Johnson will take on the position of chief strategy and transformation officer, having joined the bank in February from Virgin Money in the UK and before that from AIB.

Bank of Ireland Group Chief Executive Francesca McDonagh said Mark Spain was fulfilling this role during a period of transformation for the Bank of Ireland Group.

“He brings to the role his deep understanding of the Group’s strategic and financial progress and goals, as well as his extensive experience in strategy development and execution, transformation and mergers and acquisitions.” Bank of Ireland appoints insider Mark Spain as CFO as O’Grady exits
