Sergio Busquets was sent off as Robert Lewandowski’s Barcelona debut ended in a frustrating stalemate against Rayo Vallecano.

The Spain midfielder was sacked for a second bookable injury-time offense on a night at the Nou Camp when Lewandowski failed to open his LaLiga account the first time.

Joselu won and converted a penalty in the eighth minute of added time as Espanyol staged a remarkable comeback in a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo.

Goals from Iago Aspas and Goncalo Paciencia on either side of half-time seemed to have put the hosts ahead but Edu Exposito halved the deficit with 18 minutes to go before Joselu kept his nerve to score a point.

Villarreal substitute Alex Baena scored twice in the last nine minutes to guide his side to a 3-0 win at Real Valladolid.

Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring after 49 minutes but Baena dashed any hopes of a comeback with goals in the 81st and 90th minutes.

Ante Rebic secured a double as Serie A champions AC Milan started the season with a 4-2 win over Udinese.

After Rodrigo Becao’s shot in the second minute, Milan equalized with a penalty from Theo Hernandez in the 11th minute before Rebic and Adam Masina exchanged goals.

But Brahim Diaz restored the home side’s lead after the break and Rebic made sure of it.

Arch-rivals Inter Milan were also victorious when striker Romelu Lukaku registered a goal just two minutes after his return.

Assan Ceesay’s equalizer appeared to have given Lecce a point, but substitute Denzel Dumfries won it for the visitors in the fifth minute of added time.

Ademola Lookman was also a late, late goalscorer in Atalanta’s 2-0 win at Sampdoria.

The former Everton midfielder’s goal in the 95th minute cemented the lead his side had taken through Rafael Toloi in the first half.

Goals from Aleksey Miranchuk and Antonio Sanabria gave Torino a 2-1 win at newly promoted Monza, with Dany Mota going from behind in the dying seconds.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were both among the goals as Ligue 1 champions Paris beat St Germain Montpellier 5-2.

Falaye Sacko’s own goal got the ball rolling before Neymar scored a second from the penalty spot and then headed home a third.

Wahbi Khazri pulled back for the visitors but Mbappe and Renato Sanches made it 5-1 before Enzo Tchato’s late consolation goal.

Summer new signing Breel Embolo clinched a point for 10-man Monaco as they battled Rennes to a 1-1 draw.

The home side sent Youssouf Fofana off after just 15 minutes for a challenge against Martin Terrier and fell short of a Gaetan Laborde goal in the 59th minute before Embolo intervened.

In Germany, Timo Werner’s debut goal on his Bundesliga return was just enough to secure a point as 10-man RB Leipzig were pushed back by Cologne.

Werner, back at his former club after leaving Chelsea for £25.3m, struck after 36 minutes, although Florian Dietz equalized almost immediately before Dominik Szoboszlai was sent off for violent behavior in first-half injury time .

Christopher Nkunku restored Leipzig’s lead eleven minutes after the break, but an own goal by substitute Josko Gvardiol made it 2-2.

Munas Dabbur came on as a substitute and headed Hoffenheim in a 3-2 comeback win over Bochum.

Simon Zoller’s quick double gave the visitors a 2-0 lead within 13 minutes, but goals from Christoph Baumgartner and Ozan Kabak brought the home side level within 10 minutes to set the stage for Dabbur’s late winner.

Andre Hahn left it too late to take three points for Augsburg after they won 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen.

Substitute Hahn scored eight minutes from time after Charles Aranguiz leveled Fredrik Jensen’s opener for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Oliver Burke equalized in the 95th minute after coming on as a substitute in Werder Bremen’s 2-2 draw at home to Stuttgart, and Schalke needed a penalty from Marius Bulter in the third minute of injury time to tie his Power to equalize Borussia Monchengladbach.

Daichi Kamada’s equalizer gave Eintracht Frankfurt a 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin, who put Suat Serdar ahead in the third minute.
