A mod for Final Fantasy 7 Remake adds some sort of style change to Barret’s look to make it more like Yoshitaka Amano’s art of him.
We’ve all seen the beautiful art in various of Amano’s Final Fantasies, starting with the first game. The cover design from back when he was still making it didn’t look very much like the design of the game itself, but there wasn’t anything quite like it on store shelves back then. Now a modder has taken it upon himself to make Barret look more like Amano’s version of the character (thanks, Kotaku).
It’s safe to see that Amano’s approach to Barret differs greatly from the style of original character designer Tetsuya Nomura (who also coincidentally revealed it Kingdom Hearts 4 recently). Not only that, the only available graphic of Barret in Amano’s art style is from the waist up as shown on the mod’s page for reference, which makes things a little more challenging.
“There isn’t much art to use as reference, so I kept all visible parts: ponytail, fur trim, earrings, and face piercings,” wrote modder Amiibolad in the description for the mod. “The rest is my interpretation of Amano’s free ones Shapes and patterns, and of course: beads! Have fun.”
Barret is the last of the four main playable characters in Final Fantasy 7 Remake to get the Amano treatment, as Amiibolad also worked on designs for Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa, meaning you can opt for a very different atmosphere than in the base game.
This should be a fun way to bridge players while they continue the tedious task of waiting for part two of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s currently unconfirmed number of parts. At least we know that the next part will really push the PS5 to its limits.
