Dramatic footage released on Thursday shows tanks being destroyed on the outskirts of Kyiv as Russian troops suffer “continued losses” at the hands of Russia’s military. UkraineArmed Forces.
His video shows a column of tanks being ambushed with artillery in the town of Brovary, an eastern suburb of Kyiv, with some being forced to turn back.
Ukrainian forces claimed the destroyed tanks were Russian, commanded by Colonel Zakharov, killed in the fighting. This cannot be independently verified.
According to Ukrainian defense intelligence, the Russian army was forced to withdraw and “turn to defense” due to significant losses in personnel and equipment.
In an update on Thursday morning, the British Ministry of Defense said a large Russian column northwest of the capital had made little progress over the past week.
It said Russia was facing “continued losses” and that President Vladimir Putin could be forced to draw from “other sources” of personnel because of growing casualties.
Vadym Denysenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, said that the country’s forces had stopped the attack in nearby Irpin and would counterattack on Thursday.
“The night was quite difficult, but in general we can say that the Ukrainian army counter-attacked near Kyiv,” he said. “No further details are available.”
Russia is facing fierce resistance as it tries to advance towards the capital, with Mr Putin’s troops subjecting major Ukrainian cities to heavy shelling.
In Mariupol, a southern port city, a maternity hospital was attacked Wednesday, killing three people, including a child, according to officials.
The air strike, which has been condemned worldwide as a war crime, occurred when a ceasefire was said to have been implemented.
Mariupol is surrounded by Russian forces besieging the city, but remains in Ukrainian hands, Ukrainian officials say.
Mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn also said that in Zhytomyr, a city of 260,000 people west of Kyiv, bombs fell on two hospitals, one of which was a children’s hospital.
He said there were no injuries. According to the World Health Organization, at least 10 people have been killed and 16 injured in attacks on medical facilities and ambulances since the fighting began.
It is not clear if this includes deaths reported as a result of the strike on the Mariupol maternity hospital.
Kyiv estimated Russian losses at about 12,000 troops and 335 tanks. Although Moscow acknowledged some deaths, it did not give public figures on the size of its damage.
