Battlefield 2042 gets rid of Breakthrough for 128 players

It looks like Battlefield 2042 has started to reconsider the big move to 128 players in its game modes. As part of this morning’s new update, the 128-player Breakthrough playlist has been scrapped. Going forward, Breakthrough will be limited to the classic 64 players.

Of course, this only applies to the X/S versions of the PC, PS5 and Xbox series – as last-gen consoles are already limited to 64 players.

Interestingly, though, DICE will be using the 128-player versions of some of the game’s maps in the 64-player playlists. Discarded, Manifest, Orbital, and Kaleidoscope will retain the 128-player version, while Hourglass, Breakaway, and Renewal will play the 64-player layout.

Unsurprisingly, why this happens is a way to make Breakthrough less messy. This is actually something I addressed in our Battlefield 2042 review. Still, the chaos caused by the increased player count and small playable space made Breakthrough 128 a popular XP farming spot.

“In reviewing Breakthrough, we found that the 64-player version presented a more tactical experience,” wrote DICE.

“As a result, squads in Breakthrough 64 have a better opportunity to work together, flank the enemy, place a spawn signal, use their plus menu to attach suppressors, then delete and hold a point – a squad helps that Turning the tide as an example: We believe the move to 64 players will bring back the pace that helps celebrate those moments of teamwork and PTFO, and will be closely monitoring how our changes help improve the experience before the Improve the start of the first season. “

DICE has been expecting the switch to 128 players since shortly after the disappointing start of Battlefield 2042. What was once advertised as the game’s premiere feature is now being reconsidered. Future maps will therefore have a smaller scale.

Speaking of which, Season One will arrive in early June alongside Battlefield 2042’s next update. Details of new content and such will be announced shortly before launch.

Elsewhere in today’s patch are a number of changes to controller aim assist to improve consistency when tracking moving targets and reduce tracking of “thin” obstacles. There are also two big changes to Specialist Boris – whose Sentry Gun now deals less damage, and Angel – whose Supply Bag no longer offers Armor Plates.

For its part, the publisher EA has apparently already said goodbye to Battlefield 2042. The game is no longer mentioned in quarterly earnings reports, and the company seems content to let DICE figure out the next steps.
