Battlefield 2042 is currently less popular than Battlefield 1, 4 and 5 on Steam


Battlefield 2042 currently has fewer concurrent players on Steam than Battlefield 1, 4, or 5.

According to SteamDB data, Battlefield 2042 saw a maximum of only 2,090 players online in the last 24 hours, compared to 2,195 in Battlefield 4, 7,498 in Battlefield 1 and 21,709 in Battlefield 5. Released in 2013, Battlefield 4 is a landmark as troubled the latest game of the Series was that a much older version recorded more activity.

Battlefield 2042’s popularity on Steam has gradually declined since its release last November and currently sits at less than 2% of its original peak player base of 105,397, even through a free weekend in December.

The game had quite a tumultuous development period both before and after its release, first realized in September when the release date was pushed back by a month. However, some issues still surfaced in Battlefield 2042’s early launch, which continued with the game’s official release.

It quickly became one of Steam’s lowest-rated games, despite being quite popular. Noting that several promised features were missing, players voiced their grievances about the subreddit, which moderators threatened to shut down.

Battlefield 2042 Season 1 (essentially the Battle Pass) was pushed back to summer 2022 in February due to developer DICE instead focusing on more pressing issues like adding a scoreboard to online matches, but that update was also a few days later postponed.

Publisher EA admitted that Battlefield 2042 hadn’t lived up to expectations around the same time, and shortly after a petition was launched online asking for a refund, which has since been signed by more than 220,000 players.

DICE announced in early March that it was aware of several issues within its map design, and said it understands why players are calling the game a “walking simulator.” The maps will be gradually corrected, starting with Kaleidoscope, but not before the summer at the earliest.
