Baz Luhrmann opened up about his friendship with Nicole Kidman, praising the actress as “a person to be admired”.
Australian filmmaker reflected on the impact of his role as Kidman in the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! on the premiere night of the latest cinema adaptation of the classic story.
Luhrmann, 60, told the PA news agency: “I think Nicole is still doing pretty well! I mean, yes, we’re great friends and I think of the cast from [Moulin Rouge!]I saw some of them more than others, but Nicole and I made our way back.
“We are great friends and so am I, I don’t know if I can say I’m proud of her, I’m really smitten and so impressed.
“You know, we live in a world where as an actress you can get relegated at certain points in your life, and she’s flourishing.
“I mean, she’s not only consistently acting in more challenging roles but also producing and creating and I think she’s someone to be admired, but she’s also just a great friend. “.
The 2001 film was directed, co-produced and co-written by Luhrmann and follows British writer Christian – originally played by Ewan McGregor – as he travels to Paris where he falls in love with Satine – played by Kidman – an artist performer, maid and star of the city’s largest nightclub Moulin Rouge.
Speaking of delivering the baton to Alex Timbers, director of the latest cinema adaptation of the hit London’s West End film, Luhrmann described it as “the final remix”.
He said: “There’s nothing great about the new team, and I’m not going to do this – I’m so glad I’m Grandpa Baz, you know, I have all the fun of my grandchildren but I don’t. didn’t have to do all the work – Alex Timbers and his entire creative team, they took this huge step forward and they considered there were classics in there from the original musical, but they let’s put music in there from today.
“And I think it’s easy to take the crown for the final mash-up, they’ve taken the mash-up to another level of art.”
