A BBC The actor was branded “disgusting” for sharing a “horrible comment” before the Queen’s funeral.

Shetland star Douglas Henshall has come under fire for suggesting it Queen’s coffin is empty ahead of the funeral of the late monarch on Monday.

Hundreds of thousands of people filed past the coffin since 5pm on Wednesday, until early Monday morning when the last of those who had queued through the night exited the cavernous medieval hall.

The trial has resulted in a 24-hour stream of people weaving along the River Thames, with members of the public mingling with celebrities and foreign dignitaries under the hammerbeam roof of Westminster Hall.

Henshall asked on social media: “Do you think the queue would be that long if people knew queen is not in this coffin? Or do they know and it’s just symbolic?”

What to Expect at the Queen’s Funeral

The comment was met with backlash from other social media users.

One user replied: “Would you even consider expressing such an insulting opinion when the person in the coffin belongs to a member of your family and your friends and family come to pay their respects before their funeral?” You are a repulsive person!”

“What a terrible comment. People come to pay their respects. Time to be quiet,” added another.

A third said: Do you think you could just pinch yourself for a while and respect the grief of people and the grief of a family and acknowledge that no one queues to see a dead body or a coffin? Honestly, such a brilliant actor and yet utterly disrespectful.”

The Queen is set to be reunited with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, while she is buried in a historic state funeral.

Crowds of mourners have flocked to London, Windsor and royal sites across the UK on Bank Day, with the service set to draw millions of TV viewers around the world.
