BBC EastEnders star Danny Dyer left EastEnders ‘fearing he would die’ amid drug binge

Danny Dyer has revealed that he was forced to quit EastEnders Amid fears he was dying after his relationship with his wife Joanne Mas ran into trouble.

Dyer joined the perennial favorite BBC soap 2013 as Queen Vic’s landlord Mick Carter and announced he would be leaving the soap opera earlier this year.

The 45-year-old has since revealed he had to take a break from filming after “losing the plot”.

Speaking on Jaime Winstone’s new Greatest Night Ever podcast, he said: “I turned to the EastEnders bosses and said, ‘Listen, I have to go somewhere. I’m going to die’.

“They said, ‘Oh, OK. uh, right’. So I sorted it myself and paid for it myself.”

Discussing his struggles with fame, he continued, “Fame has never suited me. I’d always fucking go the wrong way. So for many years I lost the plot and I was fucking crazy.

“I became sort of a cartoon character. I created them myself, don’t get me wrong […] I got caught up in it and kind of lost who I really was.

“I did a hell of a lot of drugs. I was looking for something There was a hole in me and I couldn’t figure out what the hell it was.

Door left open for Danny Dyer to return to Eastenders

Of his character’s departure, he said: “Let me tell you something now – Mick’s departure is going to be a very, very powerful thing. I would love it if the door was left open and as far as I know it is.

“So who knows, if I go out there and fail miserably, I can come back with my tail between my legs and be like, ‘Are you taking me back?'”

He said he’s sending “love to everyone at EastEnders”.

BBC issues statement as Danny Dyer leaves Eastenders

After news of his departure broke earlier this year, a statement from the show bosses said: “Danny will leave EastEnders when his contract expires later this year.
