BBC helpline sees reduced demand from viewers

The helpline for viewers affected by issues in BBC shows has seen demand drop in 2022.

BC Action Line has received more than 850,000 calls and online visits this year – mostly about mental health issues – down 350,000 from 2021.

Last year, more than 1.2 million people accessed the service because of issues like sexual abuse and mental health issues.

The Action Line provides information and support to viewers and listeners of BBC programmes, including dramas, documentaries and awareness campaigns.

BBC Two’s Louis Theroux interviews… Yungblud, which sees the singer-songwriter talk about his mental health and his ADHD diagnosis, and EastEnders, which features Jean Slater’s bipolar disorder and behavior self-harm by Amy Mitchell, is one of several programs that expose the public to mental health support services.

A series of shows dealing with suicide, grief, and emotional distress, including Gazza, Freezing Fear with Wim Hof, and Joe Wicks: Facing My Childhood, also produced episodes visits and calls for support.

Wicks, known as the Fitness Trainer, this year explored how his mother’s severe eating disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder and how his father’s drug addiction influenced him like when I was a kid.

The 37-year-old fitness guru also examined the mental health of her UK parents in her documentary.

A documentary about Paul Gascoigne called Gazza also attracted phone calls for support.

In the reality show Freeze The Fear With Wim Hof, inspired by the teachings of Dutch extreme sports athlete Wim Hof, a group of celebrities embark on an “epic adventure to improve improve yourself and face a unique mental strength test” throughout the series.

The six-part series, hosted by host Holly Willoughby and comedian Lee Mack, sees Patrice Evra, Gabby Logan, Alfie Boe, Tamzin Outhwaite, Owain Wyn Evans, Dianne Buswell, Professor Green and Chelcee Grimes accepted the challenge for personal reasons.

A two-part documentary exploring the life of Paul Gascoigne, Gazza, tells how the former England footballer copes with pressure, media attention and injuries during his career that.

In 2022, a total of 368,733 people were contacted about issues related to suicide, sexual abuse, mental health and self-harm.

“We will continue to provide vital information and support, encouraged by strong storylines and campaigns across the BBC, helping the thousands of people affected by these issues.”

As of 2021, BBC Action Line has expanded support for mental health by adding self-harm to its online help page, while the debt page now includes hardship issues and homelessness.

The Morning Live symposium, the Countryfile rural program and the Radio 5 Live show also drew 27,000 calls and online visits to support those in need, debt and homelessness.

For Love Or Money, a consumer series focusing on online dating scams, and Scam Land: Money, Mayhem and Maseratis, about an alleged multimillion-pound scam, has raised phishing issues and attracted 10,847 hits.

The Archers also highlighted fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in a storyline involving Radio 4’s Alice Carter, played by Hollie Chapman, which prompted more than 5,000 visits to Action Line.
