BBC News presenter Shaun Ley struggles as he anticipates a sneeze

Shaun Ley had to pause the live broadcast as he struggled to hold back a sneeze while reading the news.

The 52-year-old BBC News presenter is no stranger to having problems with sneezing live on air and on Tuesday afternoon he was once again tickled.

While he is usually the host of the weekday evening news, on Tuesday he appeared on our screens to lead the afternoon news as it hit Downing Street. in the midst of the ‘Partygate’ investigation.

With the news that Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have both been fined for breaching Covid-19 restrictions, the rules they themselves have come up with.

Shaun was reporting on the fine the Metropolitan Police had handed out when he had the feeling he was about to sneeze.

While the experienced presenter thought he could pull it off, the possibility that he would cut off his breath with a live sneeze over the air became an all-too-real proposition.

When reporting on the Downing Street controversy, Shaun was about to quote Liberal Democrat MP Ed Davies.

He later had to pause the broadcast as he fought to contain a seemingly futile sneeze, telling viewers: “Sorry, I’m about to sneeze.”

Taking a deep breath and bringing his hand to his mouth, Shaun pauses for a few seconds as viewers wait for him to let go.

But sneeze fans were disappointed that Shaun eventually removed his hand from his mouth and shyly looked into the camera after the sensation subsided.

He told viewers: “I think I got away with it.”

The moment was later posted on Twitter, with one viewer describing it as “the most British thing I’ve ever seen.”

As the video went viral on social media, other Twitter users pointed out that Shaun was no stranger to apologizing to viewers for sneezing, abruptly midway through.

He often shows surprise as onlookers when he has a need to sneeze and this isn’t the only time his act has gone viral.

Last summer, on the hottest day of the year, Shaun was seen in a suit, shirt and tie until the camera panned at the end of the news.

At that time, viewers were delighted to see him also wearing shorts and deck shoes as the temperature soars.
