The script states that the power outages gas supply systems and would prevent the use of mobile phone networks, ATMs and Internet access.

“The emergency services are under extreme pressure. People are advised not to contact them unless absolutely necessary,” reads a prepared script.

The script also said: “Officials say there is no risk to food supplies and distribution at this time. But they ask people to watch out for vulnerable neighbors and relatives.”

Planned blackout warning for homes this winter

The first planned blackouts in decades could hit parts of the UK if power plants don’t get enough gas to keep them running.

Households are encouraged to help avoid blackouts by using off-peak energy.

In the “unlikely” scenario of planned blackouts, the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) said homes and businesses could face three-hour outages to ensure the power grid doesn’t collapse.

Speaking at an energy event hosted by the Financial Times, Mr Pettigrew warned that blackouts could occur between 4pm and 7pm when homes typically use a fifth of their daily energy.

It’s the bleakest of three possible scenarios ESO laid out on Thursday for how the UK’s power grid could weather the worst global energy crisis in decades.

In the other two scenarios, the operator hopes to offset the risk of blackouts by paying people to charge their electric cars during off-peak hours and by firing backup coal-fired power plants. BBC prepares ‘secret plan’ for possible winter blackouts
