BBC Radio 1 DJ surprises Greg James with baby news

BBC Radio 1 DJ Charlie Hedges surprised Greg James by announcing she was pregnant with her first child live on his breakfast programme.

The 35-year-old broadcaster, who presents as part of Rickie, Melvin and Charlie, dropped the baby news during the Tell Me Something Good segment on the Tuesday morning show.

After the shocking announcement, James said: “What are you talking about?

“You’re joking, what are you talking about? Oh my God.”

Hedges replied: “Do you want to see my belly?

“I’m having a baby, Greg. Surprise.”

The Radio 1 DJ shared a picture of the baby’s ultrasound on Instagram, with the caption: “I’m so grateful and excited to share the best news with all of you.

“I’m going to be a new mummy soon and Baby hedges wants to say hi to all of you.

“To say we’re on the moon is an overstatement.”

Radio host Zoe Ball, comedian Keith Lemon and musician Example were among the celebrities who shared their congratulations.

Fitness trainer Joe Wicks also commented: “Fighting girl. Congratulations.”

It comes as Station 1 announced The Saturday singer Mollie King will host a brand new show that premieres in September as part of the station’s schedule change.

Radio 1’s Future Pop will feature international and emerging UK pop artists on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm.

Hedges will continue to present her weekend spot with co-host Matt Edmondson on Radio 1, the BBC has announced.

Aled Jones, head of BBC Radio 1, said: “New Music is at the heart of Radio 1, so I’m delighted that we’re launching Radio 1’s Future Pop which will be dedicated to finding international pop artists. the UK’s next largest and largest economy.

“Mollie is the perfect person to take on this new show as someone who has accompanied the journey so many musicians are about to begin.”

The BBC also announced that DJ Target and Rene LaVice will be leaving their Radio 1 positions as part of a schedule change.

Jones added: “A big thank you to Rene for five wonderful years at the station, I am delighted he will remain an important part of the Radio 1 Dance family.
