Beer and soul food will be on offer at the Brighton Beer Open Day

Brighton Beer opens the doors of its brewery from Friday 26th August to Sunday 28th August. Nick Mosley reveals what’s on offer for beer lovers and foodies alike.

Brighton Beer has now been traded for over a decade and has grown from a small brewery cottage in Marine Gardens in Kemp Town to an impressive entity on the Bell Tower Estate near Brighton Marina.

Partners Stephen Whitehurst and Gary Silence have made a splash on the craft beer scene in the city and wider region with an impressive selection of session and experimental beers, numerous industry awards, two of their own pubs and a seaside retail outlet.

The brewery regularly hosts open houses where visitors can experience the on-site taproom and explore the beverage selection.

On Saturday 27th August, Brighton Beer will partner with Bite Sussex to host a Yard Takeover event at the brewery from 1pm, with guests Brighton Gin brewing the spirits and Momma Cherri, the Queen of Soulfood, on the stoves their famous Caribbean street food serves dishes.

Chef Momma Cherri rose to fame with her Big House venue and dramatic headbutt with Garden Ramsey on his TV series Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares.

After the closure of the Little East Street restaurant, she has shared her culinary skills on social media and also through her Facebook page and various pop-up dining events around the country.

“I’m so excited to wrap up my summer pop-up tour at the Brighton Brewery,” said Momma Cherri.

“Come hungry as I serve a selection of my soul food classics including light bites and full meals as well as vegan options.

“Trust me when I say this is an event not to be missed.”

Along with food and drink, there’s music, retro video games, and vintage bar games to while away the afternoon.

Friendly dogs on a leash and children accompanied by their parents are welcome until 7 p.m. There is no entrance fee so everyone can enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere.

During the August Bank Holidays, Bite Sussex are hosting a variety of other one-off events including an immersive under-the-sea dining experience at Brighton’s Sealife Aquarium on Wednesday 24th August with a menu sponsored by Chef Caspian Armani of Isaac At by Brighton and Newhaven Fish Sales and is supported by around 15 local food and drink producers, with all profits being donated to the Sealife Trust.

There are also a few tickets available for a benefit event at the Brighton Toy and Model Museum on Trafalgar Street.

Guests have exclusive evening access to explore the museum’s collection while enjoying themed cocktails presented by Madame Jennifer Distillery, Ramsbury Distillery and Ditchling Spirits featuring Sussex Aperitivo cheese and Curds and Whey charcuterie.
