Being a top man has never been a priority for Tom Hardy

Hardy reveals to AV Club his penchant for supporting roles, referencing other actors in the process. He also aptly compares his acting philosophy to a popular sport:

I mean, look at Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman, Philip Seymour Hoffman — these are great character actors. It doesn’t have to be the lead role, but what’s so bad about being a co-star? What makes you think that’s so different from starring? The difference in some respects is like playing football… There is no difference between getting the ball to someone’s feet more accurately than the striker going exactly into the goal. Become a co-star or actor with an important position on the field as well as a striker.

Aside from the strikingly accurate soccer analogy, Gary Oldman is a fascinating mention when it comes to being a co-star. Oldman has three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, but there’s truth to what Hardy is saying. Like Hardy, Oldman has played supporting roles, including in the same film, “The Dark Knight Rises” by Nolan. But if you take a closer look at Oldman’s career trajectory, it includes a host of memorable characters like Sirius Black in the “Harry Potter” saga and some of his early works as villains in the series. “Léon: The Professional”. If we were to compare one actor to another, I would argue that Oldman’s resume is the closest to what Hardy put on the table.

Lead actor or not, a key aspect of Hardy’s thought process when it comes to acting is his commitment to supporting the opposite sex.
