A Belfast-born author will represent Northern Ireland and present her debut novel at a festival in India billed as the biggest literary event in the world.
With the support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Elaine Canning will attend the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) from 19 to 23 January.
The festival has a global following, and this year’s list will include more than 250 debates, readings, concerts and events.
Originally from Belfast, Ms. Canning is an expert in public interaction and a writer living in Swansea, south Wales.
She currently heads special projects at Swansea University, including the Rhys Davies National Short Story Competition, and is executive director of the Dylan Thomas Prize.

She said: “I am delighted to bring The Sandstone City to the pink city of Jaipur in January.
“I have attended the Jaipur Literature Festival twice before, in 2019 and 2020, and on both occasions I interviewed several writers and represented Swansea University’s Dylan Thomas Prize.
“However, this is the first time I will be there as a writer in my own right and I am extremely excited to be launching my debut novel there.
“The Jaipur Literature Festival is really a very magical place where you can share ideas and have a conversation in a very democratic environment.”
Damian Smyth, head of literature and drama at the NI Arts Council said: “The Jaipur Literary Festival is one of the biggest literary festivals in the world and it’s amazing to witness. it’s live and live again in 2023.
“In 2019, we were lucky enough to help organize JLF Belfast and bring the local version of the festival to the audience here.
“This is an event quite unlike any other and it is important to see Northern Irish writers represented on occasions like this, on stage, alongside famous contemporaries of the country. surname.
