A “much loved” octopus has died “peacefully in his tank” after an aquarium revealed he had stopped “taking care of himself”.

Bristol Aquarium said they were “heartbroken” to lose resident octopus DJ. Davey Jones, or just DJ, as the team and visitors affectionately called him.

He was described as “a fun, intelligent giant Pacific octopus who was adored by everyone who met him,” Bristol Aquarium said.

DJ has reached maturity and the natural end of its life cycle, said Bristol Aquarium, reports BristolLive.

In a statement shared on its website, Bristol Aquarium wrote: “DJ had come of age which unfortunately brought a natural end to his life cycle.

“He was closely monitored because all octopuses react so differently to what is officially known as senescence.”

In biology, senescence is a process in which cells age and permanently stop dividing, but do not die. It causes a decrease in fitness with age, distinct from the human deterioration normally associated with frailty in old age.

The statement added: “DJ had stopped looking after himself as would be observed in the wild.

“He died peacefully in his tank.”

The Aquarium team was heartbroken to say goodbye, adding that the news would sadden their annual pass holders and regular visitors alike.

But for people hoping to join one of the aquarium’s daily octopus talks this Easter, the team has now rearranged its schedule to deal with DJ’s death.

Instead, the aquarium now offers a lecture about the sharks and rays in their Coral Sea exhibit.

Davey Jones died in the summer of 2021 following the death of Gloria, the female resident of the Giant Pacific Octopus aquarium.

According to Bristol Aquarium’s website, both male and female giant pacific octopuses live to around four years and die naturally after breeding. They can grow up to three meters long.
