Ben Stokes is supposed to be named England Test captain after positive talks with Men’s Cricket chief executive Rob Key.

Key traveled to Durham for a face-to-face meeting with Stokes on Tuesday to discuss the role. and iNews reports Stokes could be officially unveiled as England’s new Test captain “within the next 48 hours”.

The report said that Stokes is “interested in taking the job” and that the ECB “is expected to announce his appointment by the end of this week”. The 30-year-old was recently backed to succeed as captain of Durham’s cricket director Marcus North.

Speak with Sky Sports North said: “He’s a match winner, he has moments of absolute brilliance and wins games on his own. This is someone that you, as a teammate, will naturally be inspired to play with and follow.

“He’s someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and gives everything he can for England when he plays.

“That’s always a great quality in a leader and I have no doubt that if he gets the opportunity and wants to take that opportunity, he’ll be through the whole dressing room.”
