Ben Whishaw Calls James Bond Gay Character Revealed: ‘Not Satisfied’

Ben Whishaw admitted in an interview with Guardians that he was displeased by the revelation in “There’s no time to die“Which he periodically James Bond character Q is a gay man. The reveal is brief and happens when Bond (Daniel Craig) and Moneypenny (Naomi Harris) drop by Q’s apartment unannounced for help. Q was cooking dinner and was about to go on a date with a romantic male when the two appeared at his door. Q’s sexuality is not mentioned again in the film.

“I think I thought, ‘Are we doing this, and then doing nothing about it?’ I remember, perhaps, I felt it was displeasure,” Whishaw said of revealing Q is gay but keeping his gender relatively unexplored. “For whatever reason, I didn’t choose it separately from anyone on the film. Maybe in another type of project I’ve worked on? But it’s a huge machine. I thought a lot about whether I should question it or not. In the end, I didn’t. I accept this is what was written. And I said the lines. And it is what it is. ”

Whishaw added, “I’m happy to admit there might be some bad luck about that [creative] decision.”

Though unhappy with the revelation, Whishaw noted that the film’s writers came “from a good place” when they decided to make Q a gay man. The actor added, “I suppose I didn’t feel it was forced on the set.”

In a September 2021 interview with attitude prior to the “No Time to Die” theatrical release, Whishaw advertised that James Bond would be openly gay in the series’ future. Daniel Craig’s 007 tenure has now come to an end after “No Time to Die” and the search for the next Bond will begin sometime this year. Whishaw made his acting debut as Q in “Skyfall,” then reprized the role in “Spectre” and “No Time to Die.” Whishaw did not reveal whether he will return as Q in any future non-Craig Bond films.

“God, can you imagine? I mean, that would be a pretty extraordinary thing,” Whishaw said of gay Bond. “Of course I want to see that. I really believe we should be moving towards a world where people can play anything and it would be really thrilling if someone took on a role like this regardless of gender. I think that would be a real advancement. ”

Talking to Diversity Last year, Whishaw said that wherever the Bond franchise follows, it “must be something quite radical, something really different”. The actor added, “It has to change; it must continue to change. Now we are in different times. There will always be people who want it to continue as it was, and most importantly, they love these movies. But I think you can do both. You can honor character and tradition, and you can also push it forward. And I think you have to, if it doesn’t just become some kind of museum piece. ”
