Benjamin Mendy told a woman he’s accused of attempting to rape that her boyfriend said it would be “okay” if they had sex, the court said

Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has told a woman he is accused of trying to rape her that her boyfriend said it would be “okay” if they had sex, a court heard.

Endy said he only now understood why the young woman then became upset, the jury at his rape trial at Chester Crown Court heard.

The 28-year-old Premier League star sat on the witness stand as his solicitor Eleanor Laws KC began taking him through the first of nine allegations he faces, involving six different women.

The first woman to accuse him of sex offenses was 29 at the time and had gone to his home, The Spinney in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, in October 2018.

She told the jury she made it clear she was interested in her boyfriend, not Mendy, but that he grabbed her and tried to rape her on a bed.

Mendy, the woman and others had previously been to clubs in Manchester and then stayed at Mendy’s home all night, with the woman sleeping in a bedroom with her boyfriend, a friend of the footballer.

Mendy said the morning after asking his girlfriend how he would feel if he tried to have sex with her.

The footballer, who spoke with a heavy French accent, told the jury: “I realize it’s disrespectful and bad. I asked him if it was okay if I tried to have sex with her. He told me said yes.”

Mendy said he went into the bedroom where she was showering and told her she was “sexy.”

The woman, wearing only a towel, flirted with him, he said, and then they started touching.

“Then I ask her if we can have sex. Then ‘No, because of my boyfriend’,” to which Mendy told her, “He was fine with it.”

Mendy continued, “She was starting to get upset. I said, ‘You can ask him if you want?’ She continued to be upset.”

He said he then left the bedroom and went back downstairs to the living room.

Ms Laws, defending herself, asked Mendy: “Now do you see why she might have been upset?”

“Well, yes,” Mendy replied.

After the woman came down the stairs, Mendy said she couldn’t get a cab, so he arranged for his driver to take her to a train station so she could go home.

Mendy was also asked about a comment he made the night before when they were all drinking and dancing at the nightclub.

He said the woman flirted with him and while dancing with her boyfriend whispered to her, “I’m going to kidnap you.”

Mendy said this was just a “joke,” adding, “The vibes were good. Good mood.”

Prosecutors say Mendy is a “predator” who “turned the pursuit of sex into a game,” while co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie was allegedly tasked with finding young women for sex, which he denies.

Mendy denies seven counts of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault against six young women.

Matturie, 41, of Eccles, Salford, denies six counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving seven young women.

The process goes on.
