Bernie Madoff’s sister, Sondra Wiener, and her husband were found dead Thursday at their home in Boynton Beach, Fla.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says deputies answered 911 calls and found Mrs. Wiener, 87, and her husband, Marvin, 90, both dead from gunshot wounds.
Officers from the Medical Examiner’s Office “went to the scene and seized both Marvin and Sondra,” according to the sheriff Facebook page and Twitter account. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Although the Sheriff’s Office social media accounts contained the couple’s names, a statement from the office only identified Ms. Wiener and said the family “invoked Marsy’s Law for Men,” giving provide protection for crime victims.
Bernie Madoff, who carried out one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in Wall Street history and began serving a 150-year sentence in 2009, died last year in a federal prison hospital. Madoff’s eldest son, Mark, died by suicide in his Manhattan apartment in the early morning hours of December 11, 2010, the second anniversary of his father’s arrest.
In 2009, Ms. Wiener’s son, David Wiener, told The New York Post that his mother was among the thousands of people Mr. Madoff victimized. On paper, the loss from his plan amounted to nearly $65 billion.
