Best Movie of 2021: Monster Hunter Rise and Other GOTY Picks by Dorrani

I don’t know why picking a Game of the Year is so hard. Do I choose the game where I spend the most time? Or do I choose a game because it evokes a certain feeling that other games don’t?

I think it’s really a mix of things, and if I’m being very honest and I’m sure you’ll agree, this hasn’t been the best year for games for a variety of reasons. What’s left for us is the best of the group so close together as the Game of the Year nominees.

The gap between the games I’m about to mention is negligible for all sorts of different reasons.

Monster Hunter Rise – Nintendo Switch

When I think of my GOTY, Monster Hunter Rise isn’t the first game that comes to mind. It was released at the beginning of the year in a year that, in retrospect, there are months that seem to all melt into one.

I’m late to the whole Monster Hunter craze. I was just starting out with Monster Hunter World when it released on PC in 2018, but was immediately obsessed with killing monsters and transforming them into fancy armor and weapons.

So when I heard Capcom was releasing a new Monster hunter game, this time for my favorite console, the Nintendo Switch, I thought “No, there’s no way they can capture the scale. of Monster Hunter World and let it run fine. basically a glorified tablet,” and I couldn’t be more wrong.

It plays almost identically to World except in terms of graphics and framerate advantages, captures the essence of the game almost perfectly and even introduces a bunch of new features to make it unique. unique.

The first reason I was attracted to Monster Hunter was that it required skill. You need to learn, gather information, then prepare accordingly and go hunting with a game plan. No cheat codes or difficulty sliders. It’s all about honing your skills and rising to the challenge and if you can’t beat a certain monster that’s too bad – try again. Its difficulty makes it all the sweeter when you finally take down a monster you just spent 30 minutes on.

I was expecting some new weapons in Monster Hunter Rise, but nope. What we get instead are 14 existing weapons that have been expanded with some new move inputs and the introduction of silkbind attacks using the main new feature in Rise, the Wire Bug.

These moves are super flashy and look like they’ve been pulled straight out of a cartoon, and including them in your default set of moves feels great. The satisfaction of slaying a monster with one of these silk attacks is off the charts.

Also, what you’ll hear me talk about often about melee games is weight. You can feel the difference between the swing of a large greatsword and the swing of a light twin sword and when these weapons hit the enemy, do you feel the impact? To me, these are very important to a great feeling game, and Monster Hunter has always done well to really make you feel the weight in battle.

On hunts, there are now plenty of options: spin like Spider-Man on the new rope beetle, collect endemic creatures to help you in battles, board and ride your Palimute, or even Ride monsters and make them fight each other with the new Wyvern riding feature.

You can easily earn over 150 hours from Monster Hunter Rise from main quests, side quests, and just go hunting to gather materials for new gear. There’s no shortage of things to do and all of this can be done with friends in four-player co-op.

I just love a challenge, the ability to build my own character, build theory with weapons and armor, and fight monsters that each have their own unique personality, and Monster Hunter does all of that in a great way.

Return – PS5

Returnal is a game that is misunderstood by most players. It’s not for everyone and is probably the last game I’d recommend to friends. It’s an incredibly hardcore roguelike that draws you in with some of the best visuals the PS5 has to offer, using every feature on the new Dualsense controller to enhance gameplay and quick combat, while also having some Best sound design and music. heard for a long time.

Backed by the Housemarque developers, but at the end of the day it’s hard to ignore that this is a £70 roguelike. I play many different games and know roguelikes well so I know what I’m into but I think about very casual players who only buy one or two games a year bought Returnal, played about two hours, then die and wonder why they went back to the beginning with nothing to show. An expensive realization for players unfamiliar with the genre but nevertheless, I really enjoyed my time with Returnal.

East – Switch, PC

I have no bad words to say about Eastward. It was one of those games that cemented my love for indie games and made me want to try them all.

It’s a stylish action-adventure RPG that will take you back in time and fill you with nostalgia with its modern pixel art style and classic sound effects. It’s simple to play and might be just what you’re looking for if you have an hour or two before bed and want to relax and unwind.

Metroid Dread – Nintendo Switch

Metroid Dread has come so close to being my GOTY, and the funniest part is that it’s a game that wasn’t even on my radar until a week before its release.

A great story that shows how bad Samus is (you should read Alex’s article on how she’s cooler than Master Chief), Level design promotes exploration and always gives you subtle hints Realistic about where to go next without holding hands, and it features one of the most detailed minimaps you’ll see in a moment.

With that said, you’ll often find yourself lost for a short period of time after being kicked out of the area by EMMIs who are incredibly scary! I’m sure there are cracks in my Joy-flaw when gripping my Switch with fear and adrenaline.

I played Metroid Dread on the new OLED switch and it was awesome. As you play the game, Samus finds all sorts of upgrades, most of which are for your weapon which when fired essentially turns the game into a disco light show against a darker background and really make neon colored bullets pop off the screen.

Finally, there are moments when the game transitions from a side-roller to these cinematic 3D sequences that make the game so much more engaging, especially during boss battles where you hit a perfect counterattack and it would essentially turn into a movie.

Get this game, you won’t regret it.
