A Bexhill football club, which aims to help overweight and obese men get fit, has seen 40 players lose 800 pounds this year through a “Man for Fat” healthy lifestyle programme.
Before games, players are weighed in, followed by a 30-minute six-a-side soccer game, with teams being awarded additional goal bonuses based on the players’ weight loss.
Weight loss and match scores then contribute to teams’ league positions within a club.
Players will receive additional support, including healthy meal recipe ideas and general fitness tips.
Neil Sutcliffe is a coach at Bexhill Club and was a former man-v-fat player who lost 50 pounds through the program.
He said: “Your weight loss journey with us will be fun, supportive, focused and join a group of great guys of different ages and footballing abilities.
“Football is the vehicle, weight loss is the journey.
“My advice to anyone unsure about joining is to try.
“You have nothing to lose but weight. People sometimes get put off because they feel their footballing skills aren’t good enough.
“Maybe they haven’t played in years and they can’t run as fast as they used to – in Man v Fat some guys are physically unable to run, some guys have never played football.
“Skill doesn’t matter. You can score goals for your team by losing weight, you get goals for tracking your diet, or a hat-trick for your team if you lose three times, regardless of how the game goes.
Man v Fat is an FA-linked program involving more than 15,000 players at over 170 clubs across the UK.
The program was developed by Andrew Shanahan, who was fed up with traditional weight loss classes primarily aimed at women, and decided to develop a program that would combine soccer with achievable weight loss goals for men.
Men with a BMI of 27.50 or more can join a club near them from £28.50 a month.
Vacancies are currently available through One You East Sussex subject to a qualifying postcode.
The total weight loss of man-v-fat players in the UK is currently around 460,000 pounds.
