Beyonce has lifted herself to the top of the Grammys: The star singer has earned her top nine nominations, making her – along with her husband Jay-Z – the most nominated musical artist. in the history of the awards ceremony.
eyonce’s Break My Soul reeled in record and song of the year nominations, while Renaissance — venturing into the world of dancehall music — was nominated for album of the year.
With Jay-Z also earning five nominations this year, each spouse currently holds the record for the most Grammy nominations ever with 88 nominations.
Kendrick Lamar has the second most nominations with 8 nominations. Adele and Brandi Carlile both received seven nods. Harry Styles, Mary J Blige, Future, DJ Khaled, The-Dream and master engineer Randy Merrill each received six points.
Nearly half of this year’s top nominees — announced by the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, Machine Gun Kelly and Smokey Robinson — are women and more than half are people of color, according to the record academy.
The ceremony will be held on February 5 in Los Angeles.
“It makes me feel very proud, but it makes me realize that we have to keep up the work we’ve been doing,” said Harvey Mason Jr, CEO of the Recording Academy.
He said progress has been made in the peer-driven voting system and increased membership, but he still believes more progress can be made.
“This year, I am pleased with the results and the work the voters have done,” he continued.
“We now have nearly 13,000 voters. That’s really important work. I’m pleased to think that they took the time to listen to the music and rate it.
“I think you see through the kind of nominations that they’re not just for popular music or multi-streamed music. It’s just high quality music.”
The academy added a special song for social change and five new categories including musician of the year, which Mr. Harvey said will help further diversify the 65th edition of the annual awards.
The non-classical musician category will recognize an individual as the “most prolific” non-performer and non-producer for a new group of works in an eligible year.
It will take a different approach to song of the year, the award given to songwriters who have written the lyrics or melody for a song.
Mr. Harvey said the launch of the musician category was a “major” step forward for the music industry. Last year, an update to the rules allowed any musician, producer, engineer or featured artist in the work nominated for the album of the year to finally receive a nomination.
Beyonce, the most awarded woman in Grammy history with 28 wins, could break British-Hungarian conductor Georg Solti’s record for most wins if she wins four.
Solti, who has 31 Grammy Awards, has held this record since 1997.
For the first time in Beyonce’s acclaimed career, she was nominated in the dance category. Her seventh studio projects are Renaissance for best electronic dance music album and Break My Soul nominated for best electronic dance recording.
Other nominations include best R&B song for Cuff It, R&B performance for Virgo’s Groove, traditional R&B performance for Plastic Off The Sofa, and song written for visual media for Be Alive, which was featured Oscar nomination from the King Richard soundtrack.
Three of Jay-Z’s nominations come from DJ Khaled’s God Did, a song featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, John Legend and Fridayy.
The song was nominated for best rap performance and rap song along with song of the year, and Jay-Z was also nominated for Beyonce’s Break My Soul writing efforts.
The rapper also received the Album of the Year award for his work on his wife’s Renaissance album.
