Biden promises to punish Putin, pledges to reduce influence on the US

“He thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would roll. Instead, he encounters a wall of power he never imagined. He met the Ukrainian people,” said Biden, a line that drew a standing ovation.

Biden has touted efforts to provide military and economic assistance to Ukraine, which has grown to $1 billion to date.

“He didn’t know what was going to happen,” Biden said of Putin, a line that was not included in his prepared remarks.

The US and its allies have stepped up sanctions against Putin, Russia’s top leaders and the country’s financial sector in recent days. Biden also noted that the Justice Department will organize a task force to target Russian oligarchs.

“Tonight, I speak to Russian oligarchs and corrupt leaders who no longer spend billions of dollars on this violent regime,” Biden said. “We are joining our European allies to find and seize your yacht, luxury apartment, private jet. We come for your nefarious benefit. “

But Biden also acknowledged that the move would have an impact on Americans, especially given the spike in gas prices. He pledged his administration would take steps to minimize harm to Americans, including working with 30 countries to free up 60 million barrels of oil from global reserves.

“To all Americans, I will be honest with you, as I have always promised. A Russian dictator, foreign invaders, has to pay the price around the world,” Biden said.

“I know the news of what is happening seems alarming. But I want you to know that we’ll be fine,” Biden said. “When the history of this era is written, Putin’s war in Ukraine will make Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger.”

Biden also touted increased arms supplies and economic support to Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion, the US has pledged an additional $350 million in military aid, including Javelin anti-tank missiles. Along with other European countries, Germany reversed a long-standing policy when it shipped 1,000 anti-tank missiles and 500 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine.

The White House has also outlined another $6.4 billion in funding to place American troops in Europe and provide security and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and its allies on NATO’s eastern flank. Biden made no mention of the request in his speech.
