WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s Covid symptoms have “almost completely cleared” as he made his first public appearance in three days with a virtual meeting on Monday.
“His symptoms are almost completely gone now,” White House physician Kevin O’Connor said Letter published Monday. “When asked, he only noticed a residual nasal congestion and minimal hoarseness at this point.”
Biden said during a virtual event today that he is feeling better and hopes to be able to return to work in person by the end of the week. He said he is sticking to his regular schedule and expects to speak with China’s Xi Jinping this week.
“I feel great, had two nights sleep. Dog had to wake me up, my wife isn’t here,” Biden said. First Lady Jill Biden only tested negative for Covid on Sunday.
Biden will continue to isolate in the White House for at least five days after his diagnosis and will not leave isolation until he has received a negative Covid test, the White House said. Tuesday is Biden’s fifth day since infection.
O’Connor said Biden’s pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature were “perfectly normal” and his lungs were clear. He will continue to take the antiviral Paxlovid and low-dose aspirin as an alternative to his prescription blood thinner.
“The President is responding to therapy as expected,” O’Connor said.
Biden completed his fourth full day of Paxlovid Sunday night, O’Connor said. The treatment is usually carried out twice a day for five days.
The White House has identified 17 people as close contacts with Biden, and none of them had tested positive as of Monday afternoon, White House coordinator Ashish Jha said.
Biden made his first public appearance in three days Monday afternoon during a virtual meeting with CEOs and union leaders to discuss the importance of passing legislation to bolster the US computer chip sector, the White House said. He also provided recorded remarks at a meeting of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
The last public appearance by Biden to test positive Thursday was Friday afternoon when he made virtual remarks to his economics team. The White House did not release updated videos or photos of the president over the weekend.
