Bill Bailey Reveals How Many Times He Seriously Turned Down When It Comes To The Dance

Comedian Bill Bailey has said he’s been asked “four or five times over the years” to take the ball seriously.

His actor-songwriter signed up for the 2020 series and made serious history as, aged 55 at the time, he became the BBC show’s oldest winner alongside his professional partner. I’m Oti Mabuse.

Bailey, now 57, told Jay Rayner on his Out To Lunch podcast about being asked multiple times before finally joining, explaining: “What I object to is its nonstop.”

“I just thought, I’ll never be able to commit to this period,” he said. It’s ridiculous. And of course, you know, a pandemic of the century happened once. ”

The Never Mind the Buzzcocks star spoke about work being canceled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

He told food critic Rayner: “All this work is just disappearing out the door, all the live gigs. Gradually, all went like dominoes, all disappeared. I’ve tried doing Zoom gigs, streaming stuff, and it’s pretty bad. “

More than 13 million people tuned in to watch Bailey witness HRVY, Maisie Smith and Jamie Laing compete in the final live.

But Bailey said his expectations for the show were “very low” prior to joining.

He added: “I mean, my dancing skills are basically enthusiastic.

“I have never done any choreography. I have never taken dance classes. I don’t even know what the hell I’m doing. So I might end up being a strange new type of contestant. ”

The comedian also praised his former dance partner, the new Dancing On Ice Mabuse judge, for winning the show two years in a row – alongside him and soap star Kelvin Fletcher.

“It was unprecedented,” he said.

“No expert has won it two years in a row. I think they thought, well, Bill is a safe bet and I don’t think anyone expected me to do well. ”

Bailey took the record as the oldest winner from Joe McFadden, who won in 2017, at the age of 42.

The couple’s dance of choice to The Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight is a standout moment in the film.

Out To Lunch with Jay Rayner is available on all major podcast platforms.
