He’s stopped touring but the veteran comedian shares his gems of wisdom with fans in a new TV series.

In Billy Connolly Does…, filmed in and around his Florida home, the 79-year-old sage also distributes such gems as always avoiding the nylon panels.

And when Billy opens up about his family life, he proposes a policy of surrender to your children. Billy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013, which led to him dropping out of live performances five years later.

Now, he spends his days fishing, watching TV and drawing.

His quiet life is enriched by the constant and reassuring presence of his second wife, Pamela Stephenson.

Viewers will see the close connection that the pair share, with Billy talking at length about how much he owes her.

Billy said: “She’s super smart and she can do four things at once. And she can read fast. And she knows how you bought the house, I have no clue.

“It works brilliantly and she knows how to take care of the kids, how to get them to go to school, get out of school and get into the world.

“She does all that and I smile in the background and say funny things from time to time.”

The show also features comedy from Billy’s archives, he admits: “I’m really happy not knowing how the world works.

“It really is a sin. I have been cared for all my life by the manager and people. And now Pamela and the kids.”

About love

Love is easy. Everything else is difficult. Love is the easiest thing on Earth. It just falls on you and swallows you up, and all you can do is give it back.

That is the greatest gift.

About nature

The world is a wonderful place. There is an immensity about the world. You don’t have to understand it. You must be surprised by it. You must treat it with deep respect.

I hope we didn’t blow it up.

About aging

I’m not reluctant to it at all. It’s a very natural thing and I’m ready to accept it and live with it. It’s great to have these experiences to think about your old age, that you used to be someone.

On the sheet

I was filming for an American company and they gave me a hotel room with Pamela, but it had nylon sheets, a bed. I have never known anything like it.

You can’t have sex with the nylon sheet – can’t buy any.

On the journey

When I was about fourteen, a friend of mine, John McNabb, his family was going to Blackpool at the end of September, and asked if I wanted to come and I said, ‘I would love to.’

I have never been anywhere but Glasgow, except Rothsay during my holidays. And it’s an adventure. And I went and stayed in a hostel with them and it was amazing. I really love to travel, and it never leaves me.

On life now

My body’s saying, grab yourself. Live, laugh, relax. I draw, I suck at banjo, and I fish, and I’m as happy as a clam.

He says he has a lavish life

I have a luxurious life. There is a lovely atmosphere here. There is a lot of freedom. A lot of people dream.

About his wife

I was mocked when I met Pamela. She came to see me in Brighton and went backstage.

We went back to the hotel and I had about 20 bottles of brandy. An absurd amount. We had gin tours, cider tours. That is the beginning.

On Florida

I live in New York, and I love it, in Manhattan, but in the winter it turns into an ice rink, and I love to walk everywhere.

I just can’t balance it any more. I have to get out of here.

On the houses

The star hates sprouts

On sprouts

I hate sprouts. I hate them so much that I wouldn’t stay in a house with sprouts. And I suffered like a child being made to eat them.

I don’t know how people can do that. You will stay here until you finish it.

On the gardens

Garden is good, back garden is better. You can be more yourself in a backyard garden.

It is lovely, the house is big, there is a lake that you can fish. You can fish in your slippers. Sometimes life becomes unbearably sweet.

To his house

My Florida home is the home of a drug dealer. Garage… no return!

You go in and close the door and your car in the garden, and you can exit to the river.

On the houses

Buying a house is very simple. Look at the house, stand back, listen, see if there’s any rock music playing, like from a guy lying under a car with the door open.

You will suffer if you buy it. Examine animal carcasses. It is a bad omen in a neighbor.
