BIMM College in Brighton becomes a university

A MUSIC college that started in the city has made the step into higher education by becoming a university.

The British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) was recently awarded university status by the Department of Education.

It combines with creative colleges for performing arts and film and television in the so-called BIMM University.

The college was founded in Brighton back in 2001 and has grown to a total of 15 colleges across the UK and even in Berlin and Hamburg in Germany.

Professor Louise Jackson, Academic Director and Provost at BIMM, said: “It is with great pleasure to announce to our students, alumni and past and present colleagues that we have received approval to use the University title and become a BIMM University .

“Becoming a university is not an easy act; it is the most significant moment of recognition for a college and builds on decades of effort.

“The term university is understood internationally, defined by its community of knowledge creators and leaders who transform societies for the better through innovation and rigorous hard work.

“I am extremely proud of the unique contributions our communities make to both higher education and the creative industries, and the way our graduates embrace their role in transforming the world around us through their creativity.

“More than ever, the world needs specialized universities that not only preserve the past but develop new artistic practices and outcomes to help us engage in diverse ways with what it means to be human.

“I cannot describe how thrilled I am that BIMM University, now recognized as equal to other respected places of learning, will continue to be at the forefront of all of our art forms.”

BIMM has two locations in the city at Brunswick Street in Hove and Rock Place in Brighton.

The journey to university status began in 2019 when the BIMM was granted degree-granting powers, meaning the college could take control of its course design and write and modify courses to meet industry needs.

BIMM University consists of the BIMM Institute, the Institute for Contemporary Theatre, the Performers College, the Northern Ballet School and the Screen and Film School.
