Binance is appointing a former State Street executive to lead its Irish operations

The world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform, Binance, has appointed a former executive of State Street’s Dublin operations as director of its Irish operations.

However, arl Long declined to comment on his appointment, as did Binance.

Mr. Long was most recently Director of Digital Assets and Commodity Operations at WisdomTree Asset Management, a role he assumed in February.

Previously, he was Managing Director, Operations, at financial services firm State Street in Dublin. He also held positions at Salix Capital and FrontPoint Partners.

In February, Binance announced that it was seeking an Irish director who would be responsible for activities including government relations.

That Irish Independencet revealed last year that Binance had set up a number of corporate entities in Ireland as it looked for a new European headquarters.

All entities listed Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao as a director.

Mr. Zhao said last year that Ireland is among the countries Binance is considering for its European headquarters.

In May of this year, however, the decision was finally made to set up the office in Paris.

“France has some very business-friendly, pro-crypto regulations, and just[the]government’s attitude towards this industry… has been phenomenal,” Mr. Zhao said at a conference in Paris in May.

Over the past year, more than a dozen national regulators, including those in Germany, Italy, and the UK, have issued warnings about Binance.

Some said it operated without a license in their jurisdictions. Others warned against using his services.

Last month, the Dutch central bank confirmed that it had fined Binance €3.3 million for illegal activities in the country. The fine was imposed on Ireland-registered Binance Holdings.

The watchdog had warned consumers last year that Binance was operating in the country without being registered with the central bank. This meant that Binance was not complying with anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing laws.

A Binance spokesperson said last month that the company has since established a local branch, Binance Nederland.

“Now that’s behind us, we can continue to pursue a more traditional operating model in the Netherlands,” they said.
