And it all has to do with how the “From” field is worded and some rogue extra characters that shouldn’t be there.

It came to light after researchers at VPN tracker developer Equinux examined spam emails in iOS 16.

The team all had the same crashing issue, reports 9to5Mac.

“It turned out that all teams had received the same spam message,” he explained.

Typically, the email address looks something like this: sender@example.com.

But it showed “”@example.com instead, which is not a normal email format.

“Anyone who has ever developed software knows that there’s one thing computers don’t like, and that’s weirdly formatted input like this,” the team continued.

“We tested sending an email from “”@example.com and indeed – this is what causes Mail on iOS 16 to crash and lock you out of your entire inbox.”

The issue only affects the Mail app, not others like Gmail or Outlook.

And it only happens with devices running iOS 16 and iOS 16.0.1 on iPhone 14.

Fortunately, there is a very simple solution.

All you have to do is access your email on an alternative device that is not running iOS 16 and permanently delete the problematic email.

This way there will be no problems for your iPhone Mail app in the future.
