Black bear attacks family during trek, leaving 2 women seriously injured

Three people, including a teenager, were attacked and injured by a black bear during a hike in British Columbia, Canada.

The family of four were hiking along the Wolverine Trail near Dawson Creek after sunset Monday when the incident occurred, according to a statement from the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS).

While on the trail, the family encountered a black bear who charged at them. When they turned and ran away, the bear chased after them and attacked a woman. Another woman and the teenager were injured trying to help the first victim, Global News reported.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Dawson Creek said paramedics and officers had responded to a report of two people, aged 30 and 48, being attacked and missing.

During the search, two RCMP officers found the victims in a bush, and the boar’s giant black bear sauntered around them. It appeared the bear was guarding the two women, officials revealed, before the animal was fatally shot to save the injured victims.

“Several attempts were made to deter the bear, but it stayed and did not leave the vicinity of the victims,” RCMP said in a press release. “Officials believed the bear was guarding the victims, so they fired a gun, beat the bear and killed it.”

The officers then secured the victims and transported them off the road network. One victim was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while the other two victims were taken to another medical facility for treatment, according to CBC News.

No other bears were found in the area and the deceased animal, a male bear, was due for an autopsy. The area has been closed to the public and an investigation is ongoing, the COS said.

“Avoid hiking on backcountry trails at sunrise and sunset, when most animals are most active,” the RCMP warned.

In another incident, a 9-year-old boy was mauled by a bear on September 20 in Alaska while hunting for a moose with a 41-year-old family member. Upon encountering the bear, he pounced and attacked the cub before the adult male managed to shoot the animal.
