Hundreds of shoppers have made their way to malls to make the most of the Black Friday deals.
Churchill Square in Brighton was packed this afternoon as shoppers took the opportunity to save some ahead of Christmas.
Mall staff said it was “already busy,” but expected it to get busier as the day progressed.
According to national data, retailers have seen a “steady start” to Black Friday trading amid fears the cost of living crisis could weigh on shoppers.
Barclaycard payments have revealed this morning’s sales volumes are in line with last year’s Black Friday records.
Marc Pettican, Head of Barclaycard Payments said: “Our data shows that Black Friday has got off to a solid start this year despite the difficult economic backdrop.
“If you look at spending on Black Friday morning, transaction volumes to date are broadly consistent with what we saw this time last year.
Many in-store offers are the same as online, but some exclusive offers in the Churchill Square store include three for two on all products in the new Paperchase and special discounts for the first 150 customers at Footasylum on Friday and Saturday.
However, some Argus readers said they would be staying at home again this year, arguing that the discounts online are just as good.
Donald Martin said: “Are they really bargains compared to prices all year round? I buy online at lower prices.”
Stu Coyle said: “Just order online. Better deals and fewer Muppets to face.”
Once in a single day, Black Friday now runs through the weekend and through to Cyber Monday, which marks the start of the discount week known as Cyber Week.
Many retailers will continue their discounts during this period, but consumer experts and watchdogs have warned shoppers to be smart.
Consumer expert Martin Lewis formulated his Black Friday motto to prevent customers from overspending.
He said: “If you bought it anyway and it was half price, you saved 50 percent.
“If you wouldn’t buy it but do because it’s half the price, you’ve wasted 100 percent.”
