Consumers are expected to shell out an average of €400 for the Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday sales, but a large number don’t trust the accuracy of the claimed discounts.

According to a study commissioned by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), nearly four in ten consumers plan to take advantage of the sales events in the hope of finding a bargain.

It turned out that these consumers would spend an average of €400.

However, more than half of the respondents do not trust the accuracy of the advertised discounts.

When the responses of all consumers are taken into account, including those who do not intend to buy on sale, the trust rate continues to fall.

Only a third of consumers trust the pre-sale discounts shown to be correct when all consumers are counted.

Trust is highest among young people, while those aged 55 and over report the least trust in advertised discounts.

The survey experts found that eight out of ten consumers plan to find out about the displayed discount before making a purchase.

The number of people who intend to do research is highest in the over 45 age group and lowest in the 15-24 age group.

Electronic goods will be the most popular purchase in Black Friday sales with an expected average spend of €502.

Clothing, shoes and jewelry were the second most popular items, with just over half of those under 25 planning to make these purchases, the study commissioned by CCPC found.

CCPC Communications Director Gráinne Griffin warned consumers that they have stronger consumer rights when shopping on an EU website and that an ‘.ie’ domain is no guarantee that a business is based in Ireland.
