Black Panther director thanks fans for supporting sequel’s ’emotional journey’

Ryan Coogler thanked Black Panther fans for “opening you up on this film’s emotional journey” following its release earlier this month.

The Marvel director said the film was made to “honor our friend” the late Chadwick Boseman, as well as “make people feel visible both physically and mentally”.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has enjoyed great commercial and critical success since its November 11 release.

The film, starring Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o and Michaela Coel, is set after the death of King T’challa – played by Boseman.

Boseman, who starred in the original 2018 film, died in 2020 at the age of 43 from colon cancer.

In a fan letter released online on Wednesday, Coogler described Boseman as “a giant in our industry.”

“Gratitude. That’s the only word that comes to mind for your support of our work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. I’m overwhelmed with it,” he wrote.

“Thank you. Thank you to those who bought early tickets and camped out for the opening weekend. Thank you to those of you who brought their families along – the young and the elderly.

He went on to thank fans for “organizing bathroom breaks” throughout the more than two-and-a-half hour series.
