Blizzard has announced its first Vice President, Head of Culture, Jessica Martinez. This new role is part of the company’s ongoing work to deliver on promises that it would do better in terms of a more diverse attitude, a better work environment and responsive behavior following a series of legal issues, investigations, allegations of harassment and related public scandals .

Martinez will work with Blizzard on culture-related matters, including “the overhaul of learning and talent development programs.” One of the agreements in the company’s overall settlement with the United States Equal Employment and Opportunity Commission (EEOC) included work to nurture and develop more talent from underrepresented groups.

Blizzard operates as part of an overall effort aimed at improving the culture and work environment. This year got off to a big start for Blizzard, with the announcement of a deal for Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard King for nearly $70 billion, and the company has focused on its games while hiring to continue the promised work. “By expressing the values of our connections in what we do, we’re bringing humanity back to business,” says Martinez.

“Jessica will lead the learning and development team, working closely with communications, events and all franchise and functional leaders,” the announcement went on to describe Martinez’s expected work.

This hire follows the company that recently picked up Kristen Hines as chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. Last year, the company’s COO found that a request had been made to introduce a more comprehensive hiring system was “unusable” and allegations and investigations surfaced later in the year.

Efforts on this front in recent months, such as releasing a company-wide representation report and taking accountability, and then pledging to do better and improve workplace culture, appear to be bearing fruit with these hires. With the potential Microsoft deal and other attempts to turn things around, we’ll have to revisit to see the ultimate impact.
