Humpback whale lets boat fly after collision

A group of tourists were seriously injured after the horrifying moment when a humpback whale crashed into their ship.

The collision happened just off the coast of Mexico when a tourist boat was catapulted high into the air after the boat crashed into the sea creature’s back.

The shocking video footage also shows a number of passengers being thrown into the sea. The collision has reportedly resulted in five people being injured, three of whom remained hospitalized and one was reported seriously injured in the incident Daily Star reported.

Local reports have confirmed an investigation is underway to find out why the tour boat failed to keep a safe distance between the whales, with reports suggesting the boat exceeded the speed limit.

The state’s civil protection agency shared footage of the incident, which appeared to show tourists falling through the boat’s cover and being thrown high into the air after the collision.

It is being investigated why the excursion boat had not kept a safe distance.

Civil Protection spokesman Benjamin Garcia told local media that the boatmen may not have been aware of the whale’s presence, saying: “The whale came out of the sea and struck the boat, causing some passengers to fall and be injured.

“Three people were hospitalized, one seriously, and two others were treated at the port.”

Mr Garcia also said the Mexican Navy rescue unit was on hand to take injured tourists to medical centers and said there would be an investigation into the incident by the attorney general’s office.

It is not known at this time if the whale was seriously injured in the crash, but an investigation is being launched to find out if the tour operator was at fault after claims the boat exceeded speed limits.

Whale watching tours are growing in popularity in the Baja region as tourists seek to make the most of the scenic views and warm temperatures that also attract whales to the region.
