A one-off new recording of Bob Dylan’s hit song Blowin’ In The Wind has sold for almost £1.5 million at auction.
his release was the first new studio recording of the song since Dylan wrote it in 1962 and was sold by Christie’s in London on Thursday.
The sale exceeded the auction house’s initial estimate, which was set between £600,000 and £1 million.
The record reached a total of 1,482,000 pounds.
It was made in March 2021 with Dylan’s longtime collaborator T Bone Burnett and is part of its Vintage Week Special Christie Sale.
Burnett says he’s hoping for a new record; offered on a new audio medium: Ionic Original, which will help “develop the musical space in the fine arts market”.
“I trust and hope it will mean a lot to whoever bought it today at Christie’s Exlusive Sale as well as to all of us who made it, and that they will consider it and take care of it like a painting or any other exotic work of art,” he said.
2022 marks Dylan’s 60th anniversary as a recording artist and Blowin’ In The Wind, written for Bob Dylan’s second album The Freewheelin.
Peter Klarnet, Christie’s senior expert on Americana, books and manuscripts, said: “We’re very pleased with the excellent results tonight for the ‘Ionic Original’ disc of Bob’s first new studio recording. Dylan has carried the name ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ since 1962.
“It has been a great honor to work with such an extremely important and groundbreaking advance in analog playback technology.
