Bob Dylan’s love letter collection sells for $670,000

A collection of personal letters written by young Bob Dylan to his high school girlfriend has been auctioned off to a prominent Portuguese bookstore for nearly $670,000 (£564,000).

Livraria Lello of Porto, Portugal, which calls itself “the most beautiful bookstore in the world”, plans to keep an archive of 42 complete handwritten letters totaling 150 pages and for fans Dylan’s grave as well as research scholars, said RR Auction in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dylan, who grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, wrote letters to Barbara Ann Hewitt between 1957 and 1959 when he was still known as Bob Zimmerman. They provide an insight into a period in his life that not much is known about.

Notably, in several letters, Dylan writes about changing his name and hoping to sell a million copies. Decades later, Dylan is now 81 and the 2016 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature has sold about 125 million records.

The young musician also expressed his love for Miss Hewitt, inviting her to see a Buddy Holly performance, which included short poems and talks about cars, clothes and music.

Ms. Hewitt’s daughter found the letters after her mother’s death in 2020. Envelopes originally addressed in Dylan’s handwriting were sent to the Hewitt family’s new home in the suburbs. the Minneapolis-St Paul umbrella of New Brighton.

Several other Dylan memorabilia also sold at the auction, including an archive of 24 untitled poems written when the singer-songwriter attended the University of Minnesota, which sold for nearly £210,000 and one of the earliest known autographed photographs of Dylan for more than £20,200.
