Bognor’s drunk driver was filmed from his own dashcam footage on camera

A DRINK and drug driver was caught by his own dashcam footage after crashing into a tree after a night out at the pub.

Lukas Kopania, 40, of Collyer Avenue in Bognor, lost control of his Mini Cooper at Needlemakers in Chichester and crashed into the tree.

His dashcam captured the moment of the collision when he passed out. He was pulled from the wreckage of the vehicle by a citizen.

Kopania, an auto shop repairman, was taken to the hospital and drew blood samples that were above the legal limits for alcohol and cocaine.

On September 20, in Worthing Magistrates’ Court, Kopania admitted to being under the influence of alcohol and drugs and was ordered to do 40 hours of unpaid work and pay a victim’s surcharge of £95 and costs of £85.

He was also banned from driving for a year because of the accident on February 20.

PC Steve Bucksey, of Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Kopania stated during the investigation that he could not remember driving.

“Through a full and thorough investigation that included witness calls, CCTV trawling and forensic investigations, we brought this to court where Kopania first pleaded guilty.

“Before colliding with a tree, Kopania put others at risk by passing innocent citizens as he drove through Chichester city centre.

“He was turning the corner at Needlemakers and crashed into a tree, resulting in a collision that knocked him out.

“Kopania was then helped to climb out of the wreck by a member of the public who was fortunately on site within seconds.

“He was incredibly lucky not to cause any serious harm to himself or anyone else that night.

“Driving and driving under the influence of drugs is one of the leading causes of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads.

“Although Kopania initially claimed he was not the driver at the time, this investigation shows that we are committed to removing drunk and drug drivers from our roads and using our specialists and forensic skills where possible.”

“We are pleased that a potentially dangerous driver has been taken off our roads.” Bognor’s drunk driver was filmed from his own dashcam footage on camera
