Pharmacy chain Boots Ireland has promised to freeze the price of more than 1,300 products, saying it wants them to remain affordable for customers as the cost of living continues to rise.
The price promise comes after a study by researchers from Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) found prescription drug prices at some chain pharmacies were significantly higher than independent pharmacies.
Boots said the lines in which prices will be frozen cover beauty, health, wellness and baby, and include everyday essentials and lines that customers buy most often.
However, the price freeze doesn’t apply to prescription drugs, the area where the Trinity and RCSI study found huge price disparities.
The product listing spans a number of categories such as toiletries, hair care, dental care, health, wellness, and beauty.
Products include customer favorites from the Boots brand and everyday essentials like toothpaste, shampoo, diapers and shower gel.
The prizes will remain locked until the end of the year.
It also said thousands of its boot brands are now available from as little as 99 cents.
It comes after Trinity and RCSI study found wide price disparities and a lack of price transparency in the pharmacy sector.
The cost of some commonly used prescription drugs can nearly double from one pharmacy to another, according to the study.
Prices at some chain-owned pharmacies were significantly higher than independent pharmacies, the researchers found.
When asked about the study on prescription drug price volatility, Boots Ireland said the announced price cuts had nothing to do with prescription drug price volatility.
Meanwhile, the Health Insurance Administration (HIA) has found that some health insurers are not using policies that comply with so-called risk equalization regulations.
Here, insured persons pay a contribution that pays into an 800 million euro fund.
Money from the fund is distributed to health insurers to ensure people on the same policy pay the same price regardless of their age or medical condition.
