Boris Johnson called FIFA president Gianni Infanta to change his attitude Russia in the wake of the Prime Minister’s non-attendance at the recent World Cup 2022 draw.

Downing Street is believed to have sent a letter to the president of the game’s governing body to express Britain’s “disappointment” at the presence of Russian delegates Fifa Congress in Doha last week As the World Cup approaches, Politically.

Johnson declared that football’s biggest flagship event could not be used “as a platform to legitimize Russian aggression”.

The letter refers to the recent invasion of Russia Ukraine, as Johnson expressed his “regret” at not being able to take part in the draw, but did not hold Infantino back. He even suggested that those who represent the Russian Football Union are “effectively a representative organ” for the Kremlin.

“We therefore urge you to reconsider your position on this matter so that representatives of both the Football Union of Russia and the Football Union of Belarus cannot attend future FIFA meetings and business,” the letter said.

“Football must remain united in light of Russia’s heinous actions in Ukraine,” Johnson added. “Sport must not serve as a platform to legitimize Russian aggression.”

The PM further reinforced his stance by writing: “As you know, Britain has along with 36 other countries from around the world have recently reiterated our position that such sports administrators representing Russian and Belarusian teams should not be invited to participate in international sports or in activities of sports federations and federations.”

Johnson specifically highlighted the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from the recent Paralympics as a “powerful” example of countries uniting in the face of Russia’s crimes.

Infantino has a long-standing relationship with the Russian President Wladimir Putin, a bond only strengthened after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. A year later, the Fifa boss received an Order of Friendship from Putin as a thank you for allowing his country to host the tournament.

In late February, during the initial stages of its invasion of Ukraine, Fifa took the step of indefinitely banning Russia from international tournaments. As a result, Russia will not be able to participate in the World Cup later this year.

Earlier this week, the Arbitration Court for Sport confirmed that Russia’s appeal against the decision had been withdrawn.
