Boris Johnson’s allies say the Partygate scandal has been disproportionately inflated – but the Prime Minister is also accused of misleading Parliament by repeatedly telling MPs no rules were broken
Downing Street would have you believe that the conclusion of the police investigation means the last word on Partygate.
Allies of Boris Johnson are already spinning the line that his fine was trivial and the whole affair was disproportionately inflated.
This is an insulting and mendacious paraphrase of the truth.
No previous sitting prime minister has been found guilty of breaking the law, and none has presided over such blatant disregard for the rules he expected others to follow.
Mr Johnson is also accused of misleading Parliament by repeatedly telling MPs no rules were broken.
This was clearly not the case, as the Metropolitan Police issued a total of 126 fines.
To dismiss this as a side issue is to treat those who have obeyed the law with contempt, often at great personal cost.
The Downing Street breach of the law is not an empty phrase, as Jacob Rees-Mogg has claimed.
If the PM cannot be trusted to tell the truth and obey the law, then he cannot be trusted to hold the reins of government.
There can be no gift more precious than giving someone the chance to live.
This is why this newspaper has been campaigning for a change in the organ donation law for years.
As a result of our campaign, Max and Keira’s historic law went into effect two years ago, creating a new system of presumed consent.
This legislation was truly life changing as 640 people in England donated their organs which they would not have done had the previous rules been in place.
Hundreds of lives have been saved or changed as a result.
It was a prize worth fighting for.
