Boris Johnson is recovering from “routine surgery on his sinuses” this morning, Downing Street has said.
The Prime Minister’s spokesman said Mr Johnson went to an unnamed NHS hospital in London at 6am and back to Downing Street at 10am.
Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has been promoted to acting Prime Minister for at least the next day while Mr Johnson recovers.
The spokesman said: “The Prime Minister had a very minor routine operation related to his sinuses this morning.
“He went to the hospital around 6am and the surgery was done first thing this morning.
“He was back in Downing Street just after 10am this morning.”

When asked who would bear responsibility while the PM recovers, the spokesman replied: “As you know we follow standard processes for things like this.
“We effectively have the deputy prime minister, who was aware of this in advance, and the cabinet secretary.”
Mr Johnson was given general anesthesia for the operation and will spend the day resting, the spokesman added.
The prime minister is due to chair a cabinet meeting on Tuesday and is due to travel to Rwanda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting later this week.
When asked if it was certain Mr Johnson would return to work tomorrow, the spokesman added: “I think it will depend on how he feels.”
This breaking story will be updated.
