Boris Johnson’s pompous pose indicated a “state of aggressive arousal” when he met Prince Charles today, a body language expert has said.

Today the two men met at the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting for the first time since the heir to the throne reportedly denounced the government’s plan to forcibly deport migrants entering Rwanda through unauthorized channels.

Much has been made of their relationship since then, with past reports also pointing to tensions between the two.

Their meeting also came after the under-fire Prime Minister had a hot night at the polls when the Tories lost two crucial by-elections in a humiliating blow to his leadership

Ahead of the opening ceremony at the CHOGM this morning, which was also attended by their wives Camilla and Carrie, the two were pictured shaking hands and then having a 15-minute private chat over a cup of tea.

Before the chat, they stood side by side briefly as they posed for photos together

And body language expert Judi James says the Prime Minister appears to want to show his “superior strength”.

She explained to the Mirror: “These two senior men stand side by side like toddlers being told to play nice, with their arms at their sides and a matching pair of awkward half-grins on their faces.

“The way Boris buttoned his jacket and then apparently pulled in his stomach to puff out his chest could indicate a desire to project superior strength or even a state of aggressive arousal.”

However, when it came to the first handshake between the two, Judi said Charles’ ‘over the top’ gesture appeared to be his way of keeping Boris at arm’s length.

She added: “During the handshake, Boris lowers his head in a gesture of submission.

“The distance between the two men and the way Charles’ arm is exaggeratedly stretched indicate the heir apparent’s desire to keep his prime minister at a distance as much as possible. Boris’ eye contact could be a silent plea for a truce.

“In the first picture, Boris appears to be appraising Charles with a scowl, unsmiling, as he waits on the sidelines.

“When Boris clasps his hands behind his back like that, it usually indicates a desire to stay out of trouble.”

Meanwhile, also at today’s inauguration ceremony, Charles told Commonwealth leaders that the potential of the family of nations cannot be realized forever until we all “acknowledge the wrongs that have marked our past”.

Speaking at the opening of a Commonwealth Summit in Rwanda, he described how he was on a personal journey of discovery and “deepening my own understanding of the enduring effects of slavery”.

He recognized that the roots of the family of peoples “go deep into the most painful time in our history” and that acknowledging the wrongs of the past is a “conversation whose time has come”.
