Boris Johnson was planning to build a £150,000 tree house for his son Wilf in Checkers, it has been reported.

The Prime Minister and his wife Carrie wanted to build the treehouse in autumn 2020 but had to pull the plug after it raised safety concerns.

The treehouse’s design included bulletproof glass but was visible on the side of the road, prompting police to warn the Prime Minister of the risks involved.

There has been discussion about Lord Brownlow, a Tory donor who was ranked the 521st richest person in Britain last year, funding the project, with plans for the tree house being drawn up for the country retreat, it was reported.

Some No 10 aides warned Mr Johnson about the project because of the cost and the fact that it was more expensive than some houses in many parts of the UK.

“He was told it would look awful,” a government source said The times.

The newspaper reports that it is unclear whether the Checkers Trust, which runs the Buckinghamshire retreat, would have accepted the plans as many of the trees on the site are protected.

A government spokesman said: “We do not comment on private or family matters that do not concern ministerial statements or taxpayers’ money.”

All the details of the treehouse are unclear, although it has been suggested that the project is “large-scale”.

Some luxurious treehouses may include things like rope bridges and ziplines, while others have hot tubs and are rented out through Airbnb.

Caryn Mitten, Blue Forest’s marketing director, reportedly said playhouses start at around £90,000 and go up to “whatever you’re willing to pay”.

It’s not the first time the prime minister has stirred controversy over home renovations.

Mr Johnson and his wife Carrie have renovated the four-bed flat above No 11, the Prime Minister’s residence, for more than £100,000.

The plush interior is said to include gold wall coverings, as the SNP accused him of “living it like a modern-day Louis the Sixteenth.”

But No10 insisted the PM was paying £157,372 a year out of his own pocket, despite trying to set up a trust to fund repairs to No10.

Brownlow provided £112,000 for the refurbishment, including over £52,000 paid to the Conservative Party and £60,000 to Soane Britain for refurbishment work carried out by Lulu Lytle, the designer.

The Electoral Commission fined the Tory party £17,800 for breaching the Elections Act on how the money was recorded

The Tories have “not fully reported” a donation of £67,801.72 in October 2020 from Huntswood Associates Limited – a company controlled by Tory donor Lord Brownlow.

That loan included £52,801.72 to refurbish the flat but the Conservatives reported just £15,000 – leaving the other £52,801.72 off public records, the watchdog said.
