The Prime Minister told Cabinet he was “appalled” by the extent of the groaning residue and will bring bosses on board to bang heads.

He even considered launching the Passport Office if it weren’t better and better value for money, government sources said.

He could also bring in an army of private companies to add more workers.

Standard extensions cost £75 with the aim of getting people a new one passport with a 10 day processing time.

But families in dire need of a new passport for the summer holidays are under pressure to fork out £100 to get one quickly.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “This is a serious issue for families that needs to be addressed.

“That’s his focus and he’s making sure those responsible can make sure they’re doing everything they can to fill that backlog and help hard-working families get their passports and go on holiday.”

Heathrow Airport chief executive John Holland-Kaye said it was important for the passport office to turn things around.

He said: “Usually the passport office is very skilled at processing passports. It’s really disappointing to hear (about delays).

“If it’s not resolved, that means people can’t escape.”

Airline bosses are already preparing Brits for a summer of travel chaos as there are not enough border staff to carry out checks.

Flights are also being canceled at the last minute due to staff shortages, many of whom have left during the pandemic.

Minister of transport Grant Shapps today vowed to look to industry bosses to iron out the problems.

He told Times Radio: “I am concerned and will be meeting with some of the airlines that are routinely cancelling.

“I’m sure it’s in their interest, as is the traveling public, that they put their schedules back together and I’m meeting with them this week to understand their plans to get the schedules back together.

“We have to bring reliability back into the system.”
