EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday criticized Russia’s decision to ban EU commissioners, MPs and EU journalists from entering the country.
in one statement In a report issued by the EU’s foreign policy service, Borrell said the EU “regrets the decision by the Russian authorities to ban a number of European Union nationals from entering the territory of Russia” in retaliation for EU sanctions imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine were imposed.
Borrell’s comments come a day after Russia’s foreign ministry issued a statement in which it “expanded” the list of EU citizens and representatives of institutions barred from entering Russia and said that the “EU sanctions policy crosses all borders against Russia”.
The Russian Ministry called The restrictions are aimed at the “EU’s top leadership, a number of European commissioners and heads of EU military bodies, and the overwhelming majority of members of the European Parliament who are pushing anti-Russian policies”.
The “Russia blacklist” will also include government officials, national lawmakers from EU member countries and journalists who are “personally responsible for promoting illegal anti-Russian sanctions, fomenting Russophobic sentiments and violating the rights and freedoms of Russian speakers,” it said .
Moscow has not released the list of politicians or journalists who have been banned from entering the country, although it is likely that the list will include all MPs who backed last month’s list resolution calls for a tougher response to Russia.
A year ago, Russia banned senior officials including then-President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová and other top European officials from entering the country in retaliation for EU sanctions against Russia.
